"Kristina, The portrait is great. It has enormous energy, especially in its body. I see this as a healing in itself. How lovely."~ Mukam

NEWTON BAKER is a retired elementary school teacher of 35 years and a Vermont National Writing Project Teacher Leader.  His passions are writing, especially with kids, and ultra-running where he is the National 24 Hour Run age group champion the past six years with a personal best of 120 miles.  A native Vermonter and graduate of Middlebury College, Newton lives in Montpelier with his wife Diane, son Silas 13, and daughter Devin 9.  He has two older children, Jessica and Jeremy, and three grand-children. He is fighting Prostate Cancer and Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia.

You can see this painting at Capital Grounds on State Street in Montpelier, Vermont. Newton has a special table at Capital Grounds where he enjoys his daily coffee drink with his coffee club friends. The owner of Capital Grounds describes Newton as admired and greatly missed by many. Newton was on hiatus due to a broken ankle but has now returned!  See Newton, Kristina and her daughter with the painting at Capital Grounds below. Run with Jan website, his team in training is also starring Newton. Please view the main website for Team in Training. Their mission: Cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families.

Newton has successfully completed his radiation treatment and is back to running!

Below is a photograph from which Kristina worked. Newton held up two and five fingers representing completion of 25 marathons finishing a record (most marathons by one person) on the Green Mountain Island course. This was Newton's first marathon three weeks after prostate cancer surgery that convinced him he could run again. Newton has run 100 or more miles of Ultra Marathons in 24 hours.  Newton is being inducted into the Vermont City Marathon Hall of Fame on May 24th, 2008 in Burlington.

This painting is a gift to Newton. He implemented “Portraits for Charity's” first workshop at Union Elementary School with Ash Brittenham – for which we are eternally grateful!

Friends of Sir Newton would like to make prints of this portrait for sale to help raise money for Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia. Updates will be posted here!
